RAVEN GIRL BEARDED IRIS

Iris germanica 'Raven Girl' is an exceptionally dramatic tall bearded iris celebrated as one of the darkest, most floriferous black cultivars on the market. Standing proudly at roughly 30 to 36 inches tall, it features lushly ruffled, jet-black to rich inky-purple falls and standards, accented by matching deep violet-black beards. Beyond its mysterious, gothic coloration, 'Raven Girl' is prized by growers for its outstanding performance: each sturdy, triple-branched stem produces an impressive yield of 8 to 12 buds. Blooming from mid-to-late spring, the successive unfurling of these heavily ruffled blooms provides a remarkably long display above stiff, glaucous-green, sword-like fans of foliage.

Cultivating 'Raven Girl' requires a location in full sun, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily, to maintain rigid bloom stalks and maximize its bud count. Sharp soil drainage is critical; rhizomes must be planted shallowly with the top surface exposed to sunlight to prevent soft rot and discourage pests like the iris borer.

The ideal spot for 'Raven Girl' Iris is near the middle or back of a sunny border, sunny raised bed, or cottage garden layout, where its dark foliage and deep blossom color create a striking contrast against silver foliage, bright yellow perennials, or white late-spring bloomers.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: For Iris germanica types - Plant in well-draining, sunny soil. When planting, ensure the top of the rhizome is slightly exposed to the air; burying it too deep is a common cause of rot. Water regularly to establish, but avoid overwatering, as this plant prefers drier conditions than many other perennials. Remove spent flower stalks at the base once blooming finishes to maintain a tidy appearance and support plant health.
