NEPTUNES WINE BEARDED IRIS
Iris germanica 'Neptune's Wine' is a striking tall bearded iris renowned for its rich, wine-red tones and velvety texture. Rising to a height of approximately 36 to 42 inches, this cultivar features plush, deeply ruffled standards in a saturated deep claret-violet, paired with falls of rich burgundy-wine that deepen near the edges. A subtle mustard-gold to bronze beard provides a warm, glowing accent at the center of each blossom. Blooming in mid-to-late spring, 'Neptune's Wine' produces sturdy, multi-branched scapes that hold the flowers high above neat fans of blue-green, sword-like foliage, bringing a touch of regal elegance to the garden landscape.
Cultivating Iris 'Neptune's Wine' successfully depends on a full-sun site receiving a minimum of six hours of direct light daily to support strong stems and vibrant color. Like most tall bearded irises, it requires loose, well-draining soil with neutral to slightly acidic pH; waterlogged conditions or overly deep planting will lead to rhizome rot. The ideal spot is a sunny perennial border, raised bed, or slope where the upper half of the fleshy rhizome can remain exposed to air and sunlight. Hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 9, it exhibits good drought tolerance once established and requires little upkeep beyond removing spent flower stalks, tidying autumn foliage, and dividing dense clumps every three to four years in late summer.
