Iris germanica 'Blackwater'

BLACKWATER BEARDED IRIS

Iris germanica 'Blackwater' is a striking Tall Bearded Iris cultivar renowned for its dramatic, near-black floral coloration and bold garden presence. Growing to a mature height of 30 to 36 inches on sturdy, upright stems, it produces mid-to-late spring blossoms with deeply saturated, velvety dark violet black falls and slightly lighter, dark purple-plum standards, anchored by dark, muted beards. The rich, dark blooms create a stark contrast against its sword-like, glaucous blue-green fan foliage. Its tall habit and sophisticated, dark tones make it an exceptional focal specimen in perennial borders, cottage gardens, or cutting gardens, particularly when paired with silver-foliaged plants or pastel spring bloomers.

Caring for 'Blackwater' Iris requires a full sun location, receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily, to ensure strong flower stalks and maximum bloom density. It is ideal for full sun perennial borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens and formal bed displays where its dramatic, near-black blooms can serve as a high-contrast focal point. It excels when massed in groups of 3 to 5 plants or situated near hardscaping - such as stone walls, gravel paths and sunny courtyard edges - where soil drainage is naturally elevated and airflow keeps foliage dry.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: For Iris germanica types - Plant in well-draining, sunny soil. When planting, ensure the top of the rhizome is slightly exposed to the air; burying it too deep is a common cause of rot. Water regularly to establish, but avoid overwatering, as this plant prefers drier conditions than many other perennials. Remove spent flower stalks at the base once blooming finishes to maintain a tidy appearance and support plant health.
