DRAMA QUEEN™ BIGLEAF HYDRANGEA

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hokomadraq' USPPAF Drama Queen™ is more commonly known as Drama Queen™ Hydrangea. It is a showy deciduous shrub celebrated for its large, globe-like flower clusters and intense pigmentation. It produces dense, rounded mophead blooms that can reach significant size, shifting from deep raspberry pink in alkaline soils to a striking, royal violet-blue in acidic conditions. The flowers are set against exceptionally dark green, serrated foliage that provides a heavy, dramatic contrast, making the plant live up to its name even when it isn't in peak bloom.

To get the best performance from Drama Queen™, it should be situated in a spot that offers morning sun with protection from the harsh afternoon heat, which can lead to leaf scorch and wilting. It thrives in rich, organic soil that is consistently moist but well-drained, as it has little tolerance for drought. Since it typically blooms on old wood, any pruning should be limited to removing dead stems in early spring or a light shaping immediately after the flowers fade.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining, rich soil protected from the hot afternoon sun. For pink and blue Hydrangea macrophylla varieties, bloom color is pH-dependent; keep soil slightly acidic for blue tones or adjust toward neutral for pink. White varieties remain stable regardless of pH. Water consistently to maintain soil moisture, as this variety is sensitive to drying out. Mulch around the base to keep roots cool and moist.
