FAIRYTRAIL BRIDGE® CASCASE HYDRANGEA

Hydrangea Fairytrail Bride® represents a groundbreaking breeding breakthrough as the world's first commercially available cascade-type interspecific hybrid hydrangea. Its parentage crosses Hydrangea macrophylla with wild Asian climbing species (H. scandens and H. chinensis). A dense, mounding shrub reaching 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, it fundamentally differs from traditional varieties in its flowering. While standard hydrangeas set flower buds at the terminal tips of their branches, Fairytrail Bride® exhibits lateral bud flowering - producing lacecap-like inflorescences from nearly every leaf axil along the length of its arching, trailing stems. Beginning in late spring and continuing through fall, the long, cascading sprays are smothered in pure white sterile florets surrounding a center of fertile flowers, with the white petals occasionally developing a delicate blush-pink tint under cool late-season temperatures.

Hydrangea Fairytrail Bride® excels both in container displays, tall patio urns, and retaining wall spillway edges - and as a flowering groundcover in semi-shaded garden borders. It prefers morning sun with dappled afternoon shade. It requires rich, organic, well-draining soil with consistent moisture, though unlike Hydrangea macrophylla, its pure white flower coloration is genetically stable and unaffected by soil pH or aluminum availability.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in dappled sun, in well-draining, rich soil protected from the hot afternoon sun. Because it flowers on both old wood (from lateral buds) and new growth, pruning needs are minimal: lightly shape the plant or trim back weak shoots immediately after the main early summer flush, taking care not to perform severe late-season cutbacks that would sacrifice the next spring's lateral bud display.
