EARTH ANGEL HOSTA

Hosta 'Earth Angel' is a giant Hosta and the variegated sport of the Hosta 'Blue Angel', earning it the title of Hosta of the Year in 2009. Forming an impressive, arching mound roughly 30 inches tall with a broad spread of 5 feet or more at maturity, it features huge, heart-shaped, blue-green leaves adorned with wide, creamy-yellow margins that transition to creamy-white as summer progresses. The heavy substance and deeply ribbed, thick texture of its leaves provide excellent slug resistance while adding architectural mass to shade gardens. In midsummer, tall 3- to 4-foot scapes emerge above the massive mound, bearing pale lavender to near-white bell-shaped flowers that attract hummingbirds and bees.

Hosta 'Earth Angel' performs best in partial to full shade, ideal in spots receiving dappled morning sun and protection from harsh afternoon heat, which can scorch the wide leaf margins. It flourishes in fertile, organically rich, moist, but well-draining soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Once established, 'Earth Angel' exhibits great longevity and cold hardiness, though it benefits from a layer of organic mulch to preserve soil moisture through hot summer stretches.
