Zone: 4DARK MYSTERY ROSE MALLOW
Hibiscus 'Dark Mystery' is a showstopper that brings a moody, sophisticated drama to any garden landscape. Unlike the bright, tropical varieties many are used to, 'Dark Mystery' hardy hibiscus is defined by its incredibly dark, wine-purple to near-black heart-shaped foliage. This deep backdrop provides a stunning contrast for its massive, 8 to 9-inch flowers. The blooms are a crisp, creamy white with a prominent cherry-red eye that bleeds into the delicate veining of the petals, creating a polkadot effect across the shrub when in full bloom from mid-to-late summer.
To keep this 'Dark Mystery' Hibiscus thriving, you need to lean into its love for moisture and light. Its ideal spot is a location with full sun (at least 6 hours a day) to ensure the foliage maintains its signature dark pigment; in too much shade, the leaves may fade to a dull green. It is a "wet-feet" tolerant plant, making it perfect for low spots in the garden or near water features, provided the soil is rich. Care is relatively straightforward. Cut the stems back to about 4-6 inches from the ground in early spring, as it blooms on new growth. Just be patient - hardy hibiscus are notorious "late sleepers" and may not emerge from the ground until the soil is consistently warm in late spring.
