Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra Athena Gold™ is a standout perennial known for its exceptionally sturdy habit and prolific blooming period. Often called False Sunflower, it features semi-double to double flowers with bright, golden-yellow petals surrounding a deep orange-bronze center. Unlike some older varieties that tend to become leggy or flop under the weight of their blooms, Athena Gold™ maintains a compact, upright form, typically reaching about 2 to 3 feet in height. Its deep green, lance-shaped foliage provides a clean backdrop for the flowers, which begin appearing in midsummer and continue to brighten the garden well into autumn.
To flourish, Athena Gold™ requires an ideal spot in full sun, which ensures the strongest stems and the highest volume of flower production. It is highly adaptable to various soil types, including clay, provided the area is well-drained. While it is notably drought-tolerant once its root system is established, regular watering during peak summer heat will keep the foliage looking crisp and extend the life of the blooms. It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9 and is a favorite for pollinators like bees and butterflies.

To help Heliopsis Athena Gold™ settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly but avoid overwatering. Provide full sun to partial shade. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. For the best appearance, deadheading spent blooms will encourage a continuous flush of flowers, and the stems can be cut back to the ground in late winter or early spring to make way for new growth.
