DARK ROAST CRANESBILL

Geranium maculatum 'Dark Roast' is a striking, shade-tolerant cranesbill prized for its deeply divided, chocolate-to-bronze foliage that retains its rich dark color throughout the growing season. Rising on slender stems above the mounded 12 to 15 inch foliage canopy, bright purple blooms appear in late spring and hold through early summer, creating a dramatic color contrast against the dark brown leaves. Unlike many spring ephemeral cranesbills that die back when summer heat arrives, 'Dark Roast' exhibits superior heat tolerance, maintaining its structural, mounded habit without melting away in humid summers. It makes an exceptional accent or drift planting for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and cottage-style landscapes where its bold foliage breaks up uniform greens.

To achieve the richest foliage color, 'Dark Roast' performs best in dappled sun to partial shade; while it will grow in full shade, a few hours of gentle morning sun intensify the dark bronze tones without scorching the leaves. It thrives in organically rich, moist, but well-drained soils, mimicking its native woodland floor habitat. Once established, it is moderately tolerant of dry shade, though consistent moisture through peak summer heat keeps the foliage looking lush and prevents leaf tip burn.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in a location with partial sun and well-draining soil. Water regularly but avoid overwatering. Prune back after blooming to encourage new growth. Fertilize lightly during the growing season. Shear back spent flower stems to the basal foliage to clean up the plant and encourage a tight, tidy habit.
