Zone: 3CHERRY BERRIES™ WINTERGREEN
Gaultheria procumbens Cherry Berries™, commonly known as Cherry Berries™ Wintergreen or Checkerberry, is an enchanting evergreen groundcover that offers year-round visual interest. It is celebrated for its oversized, bright red berries that ripen in fall and persist through winter, contrasting beautifully against its leathery, dark green foliage. In spring, Cherry Berries™ produces dainty, bell-shaped white flowers, and as the weather cools, the leaves often take on a sophisticated bronze or burgundy tint. Beyond its beauty, the plant is famous for its minty fragrance; the leaves and berries release a classic wintergreen scent when crushed, making it a fragrant delight for woodland gardens or seasonal containers.
To care for Cherry Berries™, you must mimic its native forest floor environment by providing a spot with partial to full shade, as harsh afternoon sun can scorch its leaves. It thrives in acidic, organically rich soil that stays consistently moist but drains well; adding peat moss or compost at the time of planting is highly beneficial. Because it is a shallow-rooted plant, it is sensitive to drought, so ensure it receives regular watering to keep the soil from drying out completely, especially during the summer months.
