SWEET WOODRUFF

Galium odoratum is a low-growing, shade-loving perennial valued for its delicate texture and ability to form a soft, spreading groundcover. Its bright green leaves create a lush carpet that brings a refined, woodland feel to the garden. In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of tiny, star-shaped white flowers that hover just above the foliage, adding a light, airy effect. When crushed or dried, the foliage releases a sweet, hay-like fragrance, which has historically been used in sachets and potpourri. Its gentle spreading habit makes it especially useful for naturalizing in shaded areas without becoming aggressively invasive.

Plant Galium odoratum in partial to full shade with moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It prefers consistently cool, evenly moist conditions and may struggle in hot, dry sites, especially in full sun. Once established, it will slowly spread to form a dense groundcover, helping to suppress weeds in woodland gardens, shaded borders, and under trees. It is an excellent choice for softening edges, filling in shaded spaces, and creating a cohesive understory planting in naturalistic landscapes.
