FORT LARAMIE STRAWBERRY
Fragaria x ananassa 'Fort Laramie' is a legendary everbearing strawberry cultivar known primarily for its extreme cold hardiness and exceptional runner production. Originally developed in Wyoming to withstand brutal winters, this robust variety can survive temperatures as low as -30 degrees(F) with proper mulching. 'Fort Laramie' produces large, bright scarlet berries that are remarkably sweet and aromatic, with a firm texture that holds up well for fresh eating or preserves. Because it is an everbearing type, 'Fort Laramie' doesn't just provide one summer harvest; it offers a heavy initial crop in early summer followed by consistent flushes of fruit until the first hard frost.
'Fort Laramie' needs full sun and rich, well-draining soil that is high in organic matter. It is ideal for hanging baskets, pyramid planters, or elevated strawberry jars. For the highest yields, maintain consistent moisture throughout the growing season and apply a balanced fertilizer once the first spring blossoms appear. Because of its sprawling nature, it also excels as a productive edible groundcover in garden borders, where it can be allowed to fill in gaps and create a lush, berry-filled carpet.
