BOULDER BLUE FESCUE GRASS

Festuca ovina var. glauca 'Boulder Blue' is an exceptionally hardy and compact ornamental grass, often favored for its deep, intense metallic blue coloration. This cool-season fescue forms a dense, stiffly upright mound of needle-like foliage that typically reaches about 6 to 9 inches in height and 6 to 12 inches in width. While many blue fescues can appear slightly "washed out" in the peak of summer, 'Boulder Blue' is known for its ability to retain its vivid, steely hue even through periods of high heat and humidity. In late spring to early summer, it produces slender, wheat-like flower spikes that rise above the blue tufts, maturing into a soft, golden-tan seed head.

Caring for 'Boulder Blue' is remarkably simple, as it thrives on neglect and requires "lean" conditions to look its best. It performs most vibrantly in full sun, which is essential for maintaining its signature blue wax coating; in too much shade, the plant will turn a duller green and lose its tight, mounded shape. This grass must have sharply drained soil and is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it a perfect candidate for rock gardens, sandy slopes, or as a modern architectural edging. Maintenance is minimal: in early spring, simply "comb" through the clump with your fingers or a small rake to remove dead blades or lightly trim the tips to refresh the mound for the new growing season.
