Epimedium grandiflorum is commonly known as Barrenwort. It is a dense rhizomatous, clump-forming, deciduous perennial with green heart-shaped leaves with bright red stems. Its large, long-spurred flowers are pink, white, yellow or purple.
Barrenwort is easy to grow and deer and rabbit tolerant. It thrives in part shade to full shade in average, acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soils. Ideal as a ground cover and erosion control. Epimediums are one of the few plants capable of surviving in dry shade.
