Dryopteris filix-mas 'Parsley' is a delightful and compact cultivar of the Male Fern, named for its incredibly thick, crinkled, and heavily congested foliage that mimics the appearance of fresh parsley. Unlike the tall, arching fronds of the species, 'Parsley' stays relatively low and dense, forming a tight, dark green mound of "crisped" leaflets. Its unique, ruffled texture provides a heavy visual weight that contrasts beautifully with more delicate, airy ferns or the smooth, broad leaves of hostas.
To keep 'Parsley' looking its best, plant it in partial to full shade. It is a robust and hardy variety that thrives in rich, moist, but well-drained soil. One of its greatest strengths is its versatility; it is notably more tolerant of drier soils and alkaline conditions than many other fern species, making it a "workhorse" for challenging garden spots.
Because the foliage is so dense, 'Parsley' is remarkably sturdy and holds up well against wind and rain. In many climates, 'Parsley' is semi-evergreen, maintaining its deep green color well into the winter months. To maintain its tidy habit, simply remove any old or tattered fronds in early spring to clear the path for the new, tightly curled "parsley-like" fiddleheads to emerge.

To help Dryopteris settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in rich, humus-heavy soil that is moist but well-draining. Dryopteris prefer consistent moisture but require good drainage to prevent crown rot; unlike bog-loving ferns, they will not tolerate long periods of standing water. Mulch with organic matter to keep roots cool and retain moisture.
