KODIAK® SPICED HONEYSUCKLE

Diervilla Kodiak Spiced™, also known as Kodiak Spiced™ Bush Honeysuckle, is a tough-as-nails deciduous shrub that brings an intense splash of warm color to the landscape without the invasive tendencies of some other honeysuckles. It is valued for its dramatic foliage, which emerges in a vivid orange-red before maturing to a bronzy green, only to finish the season with a bright red autumn display. In mid-summer, Kodiak Spiced™ produces clusters of small, bright yellow trumpet-shaped flowers that provide a sharp contrast to the spicy-toned leaves and serve as a significant food source for bumblebees and other native pollinators.

Caring for Kodiak Spiced™ is incredibly simple, as this variety is notably adaptable to difficult growing conditions, including dry shade and poor soil. For the most intense foliage color, plant it in full sun, though it will grow quite happily in partial to full shade with slightly more muted tones. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it prefers consistent moisture in well-draining soil during its first two growing seasons to build a strong root system. It requires very little maintenance, but you can prune it back by about one-third in early spring to encourage a flush of that brilliant new orange growth and to keep its mounding shape tidy.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in average to well-draining soil, noting that these shrubs are remarkably adaptable to a variety of conditions, ranging from full sun to partial shade. While they demonstrate excellent drought tolerance once established, provide consistent moisture during the first growing season to encourage a deep, robust root system. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead wood or to manage size, as these plants respond well to rejuvenation pruning to maintain a dense, attractive habit. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the root zone to suppress weeds and stabilize soil moisture, keeping the material away from the crown to prevent stem rot.
