Diervilla rivularis 'SMNDRSF' PP27550 Proven Winners® Color Choice® Kodiak® Black is commonly referred to as Kodiak® Black Diervilla. This tough, easy growing deciduous shrub is a Proven Winners® Color Choice® selection that features dark burgundy-black foliage that matures to bright red tones in fall. Its bright yellow flowers contrast nicely with the foliage and attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds throughout the summer. It is one of the best shade tolerant shrubs, although foliage colors are more intense with sun.
Kodiak® Black Diervilla thrives in full to part sun in average, evenly moist, well-drained soils. It is deer resistant and can be drought tolerant once established. It is ideal for erosion control plantings as well as borders and other mass plantings.

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in average to well-draining soil, noting that these shrubs are remarkably adaptable to a variety of conditions, ranging from full sun to partial shade. While they demonstrate excellent drought tolerance once established, provide consistent moisture during the first growing season to encourage a deep, robust root system. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead wood or to manage size, as these plants respond well to rejuvenation pruning to maintain a dense, attractive habit. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the root zone to suppress weeds and stabilize soil moisture, keeping the material away from the crown to prevent stem rot.
