SILVERSTONE COTONEASTER

Cotoneaster buxifolia Silverstone® ('RutCot1') is an exceptional, fine-textured evergreen shrub distinguished by its distinctive, cool silver-blue foliage and arching, firework-like branching habit. Reaching 2 to 3 feet in height with a generous 4 to 5 foot spread, this low-mounding selection forms a dense, springy groundcover that breaks up leafy garden monochromatic greens with striking metallic tones. In late spring, small white blossoms emerge along the stems, later maturing into bright red autumn and winter berries that provide vibrant contrast against the persistent silvery foliage. Valued for its robust fire-blight resistance and immunity to browsing deer, it serves as an ideal architectural groundcover, low border edging, or erosion control plant on exposed slopes.

For optimal performance, position Silverstone® in full sun - at least six hours of direct sunlight daily - to maintain its dense habit and intensify its silvery leaf coloration. Highly adaptable across USDA Zones 5 through 10, it is remarkably flexible about soil type and thrives in lean, dry, or poor soils as long as drainage is adequate. Once established, it exhibits outstanding drought tolerance and requires very little supplemental water or fertilizer.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in very well-draining soil, as these species are particularly sensitive to waterlogged conditions and root rot, especially during the winter months. Select a site in full sun to partial shade, which encourages the most prolific flowering and the development of their signature autumn berries. These shrubs are highly adaptable and exhibit excellent drought tolerance once established, requiring supplemental water primarily during the first season or periods of severe heat. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant or manage its spread, as these varieties possess a naturally vigorous, sprawling habit that benefits from occasional maintenance.
