SIXTEEN CANDLES SUMMERSWEET

Clethra alnifolia 'Sixteen Candles' is commonly referred to as Sixteen Candles Summersweet or Sixteen Candles Pepperbush. It is a dense, rounded, deciduous shrub with strong stems that do not flop over. It features fragrant white 6 inch vertical flower spikes that are held erect on sturdy stems, resembling candles. It entices butterflies, bees and other beneficial pollinators to visit. Serrated, glossy green leaves turn an attractive yellow in fall.

Sixteen Candles Summersweet thrives in full sun to part shade with moist, acidic, fertile, soils. Do not let the soil dry out. It is ideal for borders, beds, understory plantings, and naturalized areas near streams and ponds.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
