RUBROMARGINATA PINK CLEMATIS (GROUP3)

Clematis x triternata 'Rubromarginata' (often classified in the Flammula Group) is an exceptionally vigorous, heirloom hybrid vine - a cross between C. flammula and C. viticella - celebrated for its overwhelming floral output and powerful fragrance. Reaching mature heights of 10 feet, this deciduous woody climber forms a dense, scrambling framework clad in fine-textured, pinnate green foliage. From mid-summer through early autumn, it produces thousands of small, 1.5-inch star-like blossoms held in light, airy panicles. Each cruciform flower features narrow, reflexed tepals that transition from a bright creamy-white throat to intense reddish-violet or magenta-purple tips, surrounding a central cluster of creamy-yellow stamens. Botanists and garden designers value it immensely for its sensory impact: on warm summer afternoons, the blooms emit an intense, sweet almond and vanilla fragrance that carries across the landscape.

In terms of landscape management and cultivation, 'Rubromarginata' is robust, adaptable, and naturally resistant to clematis wilt. Belonging to Pruning Group 3 (C), it flowers exclusively on current season's growth, making routine maintenance simple: hard-prune all stems back to a set of strong, healthy buds about 12 to 18 inches above the soil line in late winter or early spring before new growth breaks. It thrives in full sun to partial shade in moist, fertile, sharply draining soil with a neutral-to-slightly-alkaline pH.

Clematis Groups:
Clematis Group 1 (Early-flowering) - These varieties bloom on old wood (growth from the previous year) in early spring. They generally require no routine pruning; if they become too large or untidy, simply trim them back immediately after they finish flowering.

Clematis Group 2 (Large-flowered hybrids) - These typically produce a flush of blooms in early summer on old wood and often a second, lighter flush on new growth later in the season. Prune them lightly in early spring by removing dead or weak stems, cutting back to the highest pair of healthy buds, and optionally trimming again after the first bloom to encourage re-flowering.

Clematis Group 3 (Late-flowering) - These bloom on new wood (growth produced during the current season) in late summer or fall. They are the most forgiving to prune; cut them back hard in late winter or early spring, typically to about 6–12 inches above the ground, to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant blooms.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: This variety falls in Group 3. Plant with the crown 2-3 inches deep in well-draining soil. Mulch well to keep the roots cool. Pruning: These bloom on new growth. In late winter or very early spring, cut the entire plant back hard to 6-12 inches above the soil level. This ensures vigorous, new growth and a full flush of flowers every single year.
