PIILU WHITE CLEMATIS (GROUP2)
Clematis Piilu® (also sold under the trade name 'Little Duckling') is a compact Estonian hybrid within the Ranunculaceae family, renowned for its extraordinary floriferousness and unique dimorphic blooming behavior. Reaching a manageable height of just 6 to 7 feet, this compact, twining vine produces 3 to 5 inch flowers featuring soft mauve-pink tepals, each highlighted by a wide, reddish-pink to magenta central bar and a contrasting center of bright yellow anthers.
A classic Pruning Group 2 (B1) cultivar, Piilu® exhibits a dual floral character: its primary flush in late spring to early summer (MayβJune) on overwintered old wood yields heavily textured, fully double or semi-double blossoms, while its secondary flush in late summer to early autumn on new shoots consists of single, star-shaped flowers.
In the landscape, the compact stature and dense flower production of Clematis Piilu® make it an ideal candidate for container cultivation, small-space vertical structures, or scrambling over low walls and decorative obelisks. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, requiring fertile, moist, sharply draining soil with a neutral-to-slightly-alkaline pH.

Clematis Groups:
Clematis Group 1 (Early-flowering) - These varieties bloom on old wood (growth from the previous year) in early spring. They generally require no routine pruning; if they become too large or untidy, simply trim them back immediately after they finish flowering.
Clematis Group 2 (Large-flowered hybrids) - These typically produce a flush of blooms in early summer on old wood and often a second, lighter flush on new growth later in the season. Prune them lightly in early spring by removing dead or weak stems, cutting back to the highest pair of healthy buds, and optionally trimming again after the first bloom to encourage re-flowering.
Clematis Group 3 (Late-flowering) - These bloom on new wood (growth produced during the current season) in late summer or fall. They are the most forgiving to prune; cut them back hard in late winter or early spring, typically to about 6β12 inches above the ground, to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant blooms.
