MRS N THOMPSON PURPLE CLEMATIS (GROUP2)
Clematis 'Mrs. N. Thompson' is a strikingly vivid, compact hybrid cultivar renowned for its dramatic color contrast and reliable performance in smaller vertical spaces. A deciduous, twining woody vine growing 5 to 6 feet tall, it produces bold 5 to 6 inch flowers featuring deep violet-blue to rich purple tepals, each divided down the center by a sharp, brilliant magenta-crimson stripe (or bar). This intense bi-color effect is further highlighted by a central tuft of contrasting pale yellow to creamy-white anthers.
As a member of Pruning Group 2 (B1), it delivers two distinct blooming periods: a heavy initial flush of semi-double or large single blossoms in late spring (May to June) on mature, overwintered wood, followed by a secondary flush of single flowers on new summer shoots in late August and September.
Culturally, Clematis 'Mrs. N. Thompson' performs best in fertile, humus-rich, well-draining soil with a neutral-to-slightly-alkaline pH. To preserve the saturation of its unique tepal coloration, plant it in partial shade or morning sun with light afternoon shade; intense, direct afternoon sunlight can cause the rich purple-blue tones to fade prematurely. Its compact stature makes it an ideal candidate for containers, low fences, or growing up obelisks and small trellises.

Clematis Groups:
Clematis Group 1 (Early-flowering) - These varieties bloom on old wood (growth from the previous year) in early spring. They generally require no routine pruning; if they become too large or untidy, simply trim them back immediately after they finish flowering.
Clematis Group 2 (Large-flowered hybrids) - These typically produce a flush of blooms in early summer on old wood and often a second, lighter flush on new growth later in the season. Prune them lightly in early spring by removing dead or weak stems, cutting back to the highest pair of healthy buds, and optionally trimming again after the first bloom to encourage re-flowering.
Clematis Group 3 (Late-flowering) - These bloom on new wood (growth produced during the current season) in late summer or fall. They are the most forgiving to prune; cut them back hard in late winter or early spring, typically to about 6β12 inches above the ground, to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant blooms.
