JOAN PICTON CLEMATIS (GROUP2)
Clematis 'Joan Picton' is a large-flowered hybrid cultivar celebrated for its massive floral diameter and free-flowering nature. Reaching a manageable height of 6 to 7 feet with an 18-24 inch spread, this deciduous twining climber produces impressive 6 to 8 inch flowers. Each flower displays broad tepals of a soft lilac-purple hue, highlighted by a prominent light lavender to pale central band that creates a subtle, glowing gradient toward the margins. These two-tone petals frame a contrasting center of deep crimson-purple to red stamens. Classified within Pruning Group 2 (B2), it features a dual-bloom schedule: producing its primary flush of flowers on overwintered stems in late spring to early summer (June), followed by a secondary display on current season's growth in late summer through early autumn (September).
Clematis 'Joan Picton' is an ideal candidate for container growth, small-space trellises, arbors, or scrambling over low masonry walls where its large-format blooms can be displayed at eye level. It thrives best in full sun to bright partial shade in fertile, humus-rich, well-draining soil with a neutral-to-slightly-alkaline pH. Like most large-flowered Group 2 hybrids, its pale pastel-tinted tepals hold their color intensity longer when protected from intense, direct mid-afternoon heat.

Clematis Groups:
Clematis Group 1 (Early-flowering) - These varieties bloom on old wood (growth from the previous year) in early spring. They generally require no routine pruning; if they become too large or untidy, simply trim them back immediately after they finish flowering.
Clematis Group 2 (Large-flowered hybrids) - These typically produce a flush of blooms in early summer on old wood and often a second, lighter flush on new growth later in the season. Prune them lightly in early spring by removing dead or weak stems, cutting back to the highest pair of healthy buds, and optionally trimming again after the first bloom to encourage re-flowering.
Clematis Group 3 (Late-flowering) - These bloom on new wood (growth produced during the current season) in late summer or fall. They are the most forgiving to prune; cut them back hard in late winter or early spring, typically to about 6β12 inches above the ground, to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant blooms.
