DR RUPPEL PURPLE CLEMATIS (GROUP2)

Clematis 'Dr. Ruppel' is commonly referred to as Dr. Ruppel Clematis. It is a deciduous climbing vine that blooms in late spring and late summer. Pale orchid flowers are large and ruffled with a wide carmine central bar and golden stamens. Foliage is medium green and holds up well through the growing season. It can grow up to 8 feet tall in a single season and is perfect for fences or trellises.

Dr. Ruppel belongs to Clematis Group 2 and is a strong grower, thriving in full sun or partial shade in organically rich, evenly moist, well-draining soils. It will not tolerate waterlogged areas. Clematis prefer having their "heads in the sun and their feet in the shade". Provide trellis or arbor for support and lightly prune in late winter or early spring.

Clematis Groups:
Clematis Group 1 (Early-flowering) - These varieties bloom on old wood (growth from the previous year) in early spring. They generally require no routine pruning; if they become too large or untidy, simply trim them back immediately after they finish flowering.

Clematis Group 2 (Large-flowered hybrids) - These typically produce a flush of blooms in early summer on old wood and often a second, lighter flush on new growth later in the season. Prune them lightly in early spring by removing dead or weak stems, cutting back to the highest pair of healthy buds, and optionally trimming again after the first bloom to encourage re-flowering.

Clematis Group 3 (Late-flowering) - These bloom on new wood (growth produced during the current season) in late summer or fall. They are the most forgiving to prune; cut them back hard in late winter or early spring, typically to about 6โ€“12 inches above the ground, to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant blooms.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: This variety of Clematis falls in Group 2. Plant with the crown (base of the stem) 2-3 inches deep in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Mulch well to keep the roots cool. Pruning: Prune lightly in early spring, just as the buds begin to swell. Remove only the weak, dead, or damaged stems, and trim back the remaining vines to the top set of healthy buds. Avoid cutting these to the ground, or you will lose the early season flowers.
