ASAO PINK CLEMATIS (GROUP2)
Clematis 'Asao' is a prized Japanese cultivar, famous for introducing one of the earliest and most dramatic flushes of large-format blooms to the spring landscape. A deciduous, twining woody vine growing 5 to 6 feet tall, 'Asao' produces striking 6- to 8-inch, star-shaped flowers characterized by rich rosy-carmine pink margins that fade into a prominent, soft white central bar (or bar-stripe) along each tepal. These two-tone blooms frame a contrasting center of bright yellow stamens. Spring foliage often emerges with an attractive bronzy cast before turning deep green.
As a Pruning Group 2 (B1) reblooming clematis, it displays a dual-blooming habit: producing its heaviest flush of semi-double or single flowers on previous year's ripened wood in late spring (May to June), followed by a second flush of single blooms on current season's growth in late summer to early autumn.
Culturally, Clematis 'Asao' thrives in fertile, moist, neutral-to-slightly-alkaline, sharply draining soil, requiring the classic clematis rule of "head in the sun, feet in the shade". Unlike many large-flowered cultivars that require intense full sun, 'Asao' actually retains its rich pink pigmentation best in partial shade or morning sun, as harsh, unfiltered afternoon heat can bleach the delicate hues of its tepals.

Clematis Groups:
Clematis Group 1 (Early-flowering) - These varieties bloom on old wood (growth from the previous year) in early spring. They generally require no routine pruning; if they become too large or untidy, simply trim them back immediately after they finish flowering.
Clematis Group 2 (Large-flowered hybrids) - These typically produce a flush of blooms in early summer on old wood and often a second, lighter flush on new growth later in the season. Prune them lightly in early spring by removing dead or weak stems, cutting back to the highest pair of healthy buds, and optionally trimming again after the first bloom to encourage re-flowering.
Clematis Group 3 (Late-flowering) - These bloom on new wood (growth produced during the current season) in late summer or fall. They are the most forgiving to prune; cut them back hard in late winter or early spring, typically to about 6β12 inches above the ground, to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant blooms.
