Zone: 5MELODY HINOKI FALSECYPRESS
Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Melody', commonly known as Melody Hinoki Falsecypress, is a standout cultivar of the Hinoki Cypress and prized for its luminous, golden-yellow foliage and airy, lace-like texture. Unlike the more rigid, fan-shaped sprays typical of the species, 'Melody' features a more delicate, filigreed appearance with gracefully arching branches. It grows in a narrow, upright pyramidal form, adding a vertical effect to the garden without becoming overwhelming. Its color is remarkably stable, transitioning from a bright lemon-yellow in the growing season to a deeper, burnished gold in winter, providing year-round architectural interest and a soft, glowing focal point.
'Melody' Hinoki Falsecypress performs best in full sun to partial shade. In very hot climates a bit of afternoon shade is beneficial. It requires moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and does not tolerate drought or stagnant water well. Because of its slow growth rate and naturally elegant shape, it rarely requires pruning, making it wonderfully low maintenance. 'Melody' is ideal for narrow garden spaces, as a vertical accent in conifer collections, or as a sophisticated backdrop in rock gardens.
