Zone: 4GOLDEN HINOKI FALSECYPRESS
Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Lutea Compacta' is a slow-growing evergreen is prized for its soft, fan-shaped foliage that displays a stunning golden-yellow hue on the outer edges, which contrasts beautifully against the deeper green of the interior branches. Unlike other yellow conifers that look "burnt" or sickly, 'Lutea Compacta' maintains a rich, waxy luster and develops a graceful, irregular pyramidal shape over time. It typically reaches a height of about 5 to 6 feet over ten years, making it a perfect choice for those who want the prestige of a Hinoki without the massive footprint of the species.
To keep Golden Hinoki Falsecypress thriving, provide it with full sun to maintain its vibrant gold color. It does benefit from a little afternoon shade in extremely hot climates to prevent its delicate foliage from scorching. It prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and does not tolerate "wet feet" or heavy, compacted clay. Because of its refined texture and slow growth rate, it serves beautifully as a focal point in a rock garden, a companion in a Japanese-style landscape, or even as a high-end container plant. Once established, it requires very little pruning, as its natural, sculptural form is its greatest asset.

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Provide partial shade, especially during the first growing season. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote new growth.
