HARDY STRAIN REDBUD

Cercis canadensis 'Hardy Strain' represents a breakthrough selection engineered to overcome the severe winter dieback somewhat common in southern seed sources. By selecting Redbuds from northernmost native locations, we isolate a strain fully hardy to USDA Zone 4, capable of enduring deep freezes down to 30F degrees below zero without sacrificing floral density. Growing to a mature height and spread of 20 feet with a low-branching, rounded crown, it produces the early-spring display of vivid magenta-pink, pea-like flowers along bare branches, followed by heart-shaped, rich green foliage.

Caring for a Hardy Strain Redbud centers on proper site selection and moisture management to prevent disease while fostering strong root development. Plant it in full sun to partial shade in evenly moist, very well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH; avoid waterlogged soils, as stagnant moisture quickly leads to root rot. It is ideal as a specimen tree, accent near patios or entryways or as an understory planting.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
