Zone: 5MERLOT REDBUD
Cercis canadensis 'Merlot' is commonly referred to as Merlot Redbud. It is noteworthy for its excellent drought tolerance and heat resistance. It is a compact, deciduous, upright tree with bright reddish purple flowers that appear from late winter to early spring and attract birds, bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. Deep purple, heart-shaped leaves hold color until turning yellow in fall. It is more compact than 'Forest Pansy' and its smaller leaves assist in holding water thus reducing the rate of transpiration.
The Merlot Redbud thrives in full to part sun in average, well-drained soil.
