The 'KoolKat' Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'KoolKak') is a highly cold-hardy selection of the Japanese native, notable for its exceptional winter resilience, having survived temperatures as low as negative 37 degrees F. (Zone 3). KoolKat provides multi-season interest: its distinctive heart-shaped leaves emerge in a reddish-purple hue in spring, mature to a cool blue-green for the summer, and transition to vibrant yellow to apricot tones in the fall.
An added sensory element is the delightful fragrance, released by the foliage as it turns color and drops in autumn. 'KoolKat' grows with a pyramidal shape, opening with age, and typically reaches a mature height of 35-40 feet with a spread of 20-25 feet, making it an excellent specimen or shade tree, especially for colder climates.
