HEDGEHOG JAPANESE PLUM YEW

Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Hedgehog' is commonly referred to as Hedgehog Japanese Plum Yew. It is a low-growing, spreading evergreen shrub that features long, glossy green needles that are much denser than other spreading forms. Easily pruned and provides a nice alternative to Boxwood border or edge planting.

Hedgehog Japanese Plum Yew thrives in partial shade in rich, fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soils. It is deer resistant and easily pruned for your shape preference.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil, selecting a location that ranges from full sun to full shade. These versatile evergreens are highly adaptable but thrive best in sites with protection from harsh, drying winds and excessive moisture, as they are susceptible to root rot in waterlogged conditions. Provide consistent water during the first growing season to ensure deep root establishment.

Prune as needed in late spring or early summer to maintain your desired form or density, as these shrubs respond exceptionally well to shearing. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, taking care to keep the material a few inches away from the crown to prevent stem rot.
