Celosia argentea plumosa 'First Flame Purple' is an outstanding dwarf cultivar engineered for early, uniform color and exceptional branching. Part of the popular First Flame™ series, this compact annual reaches a tidy height of 10 to 14 inches, making it a perfect candidate for tight border edges, vibrant color bowls, and low-profile container combinations. It features a dense canopy of clean, bright green foliage that serves as a high-contrast backdrop for its prolific flowers. Beginning much earlier in the season than standard plumosa varieties, it produces a constant succession of thick, tightly packed, feathery plumes in a rich, glowing magenta-purple hue that resists fading even under the brightest summer sun.
'First Flame Purple' stands out for its excellent heat tolerance and uniform growth habit, which ensures that a mass planting peaks simultaneously. To maximize its ornamental performance, it should be sited in full sun and planted in well-drained soil, as it performs poorly in waterlogged conditions. It is also highly resilient against common summer stressors, holding its bright, vertical form beautifully without lodging or stalling until late autumn freezes arrive.
