BLUE ZINGER SEDGE GRASS

Carex flacca 'Blue Zinger', commonly known as Blue Zinger Sedge, is a resilient and visually cooling ornamental sedge prized for its fine-textured, steel-blue foliage. Growing in a low, mounding habit of approximately 12 to 15 inches tall, it spreads slowly via rhizomes to create a dense, grass-like carpet. Unlike many other sedges that prefer deep shade, 'Blue Zinger' is celebrated for its versatility, maintaining its striking silvery-blue color even in brighter conditions. Its narrow, arching blades provide a soft, airy texture that works beautifully as a groundcover, a filler between pavers, or a contrasting element in mixed container plantings.

Caring for 'Blue Zinger' is remarkably simple, as it is one of the more adaptable and "tough" members of the Carex genus. It thrives in a wide range of light conditions, from full sun to part shade, though it appreciates a bit of afternoon protection in particularly hot climates to keep its color vibrant. While it prefers moist, well-drained soil, it is surprisingly drought-tolerant once established and can even handle occasional "wet feet" in clay-heavy areas. Because it is evergreen to semi-evergreen, you should avoid cutting it back to the ground in the spring; instead, simply tidy up the clump by removing any brown or winter-damaged blades to make way for fresh blue growth as the temperatures rise.
