Callicarpa dichotoma 'Early Amethyst' is commonly known as the Purple Beautyberry. It is a small, compact, rounded, deciduous shrub which features clusters of small, lavender-pink flowers that bloom along its stems in summer and are attractive to pollinators. Flowers are followed by large clusters of bright, glossy, amethyst-purple berries which ripen in late summer and persist even after the leaves fall.
The Early Amethyst Beautyberry is easy to grow and enjoys full to part sun in average, well-drained soils. Its best flowering occurs in full sun. Note that it blooms on new wood so prune stems back to 6 inches in late winter to early spring to encourage flowering.

Callicarpa Varieties: Callicarpa bodinier (Profusion Beautyberry) Bodinier's Beautyberry is from China and is an upright deciduous shrub with greater cold tolerance than the Callicarpa americana (Zones 5-8) and features pale pink flower clusters from June to August on new growth. Vibrant, deep purple berries appear after, along the entire length of its arching stems, and ripen in fall. Leaves mature to light yellow and fall before the berries. Berries persist until early winter and are a great source of food for many bird species. It is larger than the Callicarpa dichotoma and reaches 6-7 feet tall and wide. It is self-fertile and does not require a pollinator.
Callicarpa dichotoma (Purple Beautyberry) Callicarpa dichotoma is from China. It is a smaller, rounded, and more compact deciduous shrub that has greater cold tolerance than Callicarpa americana (Zones 5-8). It is smaller than Callicarpa bodinier with a height and spread of just 4 foot. It bears pink flowers and bright purple fruit. Leaves mature to light yellow and fall before the berries. Berries persist until early winter and are a great source of food for many bird species. It is self-fertile and does not require a pollinator.
