SUNJOY PLUM PILLAR™ BARBERRY

Berberis thunbergii 'Plum Pillar', commonly known as Plum Pillar™ Japanese Barberry, is a striking architectural shrub prized for its narrow, upright habit and intense coloration. Unlike spreading barberry varieties, Plum Pillar™ grows in a tight, columnar shape, reaching about 3-4 feet in height while staying only 2-3 feet wide, making it an exceptional choice for vertical interest in tight spaces or as a colorful low-maintenance hedge. The foliage emerges in a rich, dark purple-plum hue that remains vibrant throughout the summer heat before deepening into a brilliant red in the autumn. While it produces tiny yellow flowers in the spring followed by small red berries, it is primarily grown for its bold, "living pillar" aesthetic and its natural resistance to deer.

Caring for Plum Pillar™ is remarkably easy due to the plant's legendary toughness and adaptability. It performs best in full sun, which is essential for maintaining that deep plum foliage; if planted in too much shade, the leaves will often fade to a dusty green. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and thrives in almost any well-draining soil, though it should be watered regularly during its first growing season to ensure a strong root system. Because of its natural columnar shape, it requires very little pruning, but you can trim the tips in early spring if you wish to maintain a specific height.
