SUNJOY® GOLD PILLAR® JAPANESE BARBERRY

Berberis thunbergii 'Maria' PP18,082 / Proven Winners® Color Choice® Sunjoy Gold Pillar® is a structural masterpiece for the landscape, prized for its distinctively narrow, upright columnar habit. This award-winning selection creates a striking vertical accent, featuring brilliant golden-yellow foliage that resists sun-scorch better than older varieties. The showy visual drama begins in spring with vivid red-orange new growth and culminates in the fall, when the entire plant transforms into a breathtaking pillar of burnt orange and fiery red, providing a vibrant focal point through the changing seasons.

Beyond its luminous color, Sunjoy Gold Pillar® is a 'plant-it-and-forget-it' solution for challenging environments. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and thrives in urban settings, making it an excellent choice for narrow borders, decorative containers, or as a vibrant low-maintenance hedge. While it is highly adaptable to most well-drained soils in full to part sun, it is important to avoid areas with standing water, as it prefers drier feet. Its dense, thorny stems also make it a natural deterrent for deer and unwanted foot traffic, blending high-style aesthetics with practical utility.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a pH ranging from slightly acidic to neutral. Select a location in full sun to partial shade, noting that maximum sunlight is required to achieve the most vibrant foliage color throughout the season. This species is highly adaptable and exhibits excellent drought tolerance once established, requiring supplemental water only during extended dry periods. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain size or remove old growth, keeping in mind that heavy gloves are recommended when handling this plant due to its sharp thorns.
