SUNJOY® CITRUS JAPANESE BARBERRY

Sunjoy® Citrus Berberis thunbergii 'Koren' USPP 24,818 is commonly known as Citrus Barberry. This Proven Winners® selection is a small, evergreen shrub that features bright lemon-yellow foliage and a neat, low-growing, ball-shaped habit. Small white flowers bloom in spring and summer and fade to orange-red fruit in fall.

Citrus Barberry thrives in full sun with excellent wind burn resistance and sun/heat tolerance - better than other yellow barberries. It keeps its color throughout spring and summer, turning a darker, deep golden yellow in fall. It enjoys average, evenly moist, well-drained soils and requires little upkeep once established.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a pH ranging from slightly acidic to neutral. Select a location in full sun to partial shade, noting that maximum sunlight is required to achieve the most vibrant foliage color throughout the season. This species is highly adaptable and exhibits excellent drought tolerance once established, requiring supplemental water only during extended dry periods. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain size or remove old growth, keeping in mind that heavy gloves are recommended when handling this plant due to its sharp thorns.
