RED BEAUTY LADY FERN

Athyrium niponicum 'Red Beauty' is a stunning variation of the Japanese Painted Fern that emphasizes deep, rich coloration. While it shares the silvery-green leaf tones of its relatives, this cultivar is specifically bred for its intense, wine-red to burgundy stems and midribs. As the plant matures and the weather remains cool in the spring, the red pigment "bleeds" out from the center into the surrounding leaflets, creating a dramatic two-tone effect. It maintains a low-growing, spreading habit that makes it an exceptional choice for adding a sophisticated pop of color to a shaded rock garden or along the front of a perennial border.

To ensure the most vibrant red tones, 'Red Beauty' should be placed in partial shade, as a little bit of cool morning sun is the secret to intensifying its unique pigmentation. It requires rich, loamy soil that is consistently moist but provides good drainage. Like most painted ferns, 'Red Beauty' is a deciduous variety that will go dormant in the winter, and it can be a bit of a "late sleeper" in the spring, so it is helpful to mark its location to avoid accidental digging. Providing a generous amount of organic matter and a thick layer of mulch will help keep the roots cool and the moisture levels steady, allowing the red-and-silver foliage to remain crisp and colorful throughout the growing season.

Planting Tips

To help Athyrium settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in rich, humus-heavy soil that is moist but well-draining. Athyrium thrive in consistent moisture and require good drainage to prevent the crown from rotting in heavy, compacted clays. Provide a location with partial to full shade - consistent shade helps protect the delicate fronds from scorching. Mulch around the base to keep the root zone cool and retain moisture.
