Zone: 4PEARLY WHITE JAPANESE PAINTED FERN
Athyrium niponicum 'Pearly White' is a luminous variety of the Japanese Painted Fern that stands out for its unique, pale coloration. Unlike other painted ferns that feature heavy purple or burgundy tones, 'Pearly White' is characterized by nearly solid, silvery-white to light-green fronds. The lack of dark pigmentation gives it a soft, "pearly" appearance that is exceptionally effective at brightening up the darkest corners of a shade garden. It maintains a compact, mounding habit, with its delicate, feathery fronds providing a fine-textured look that contrasts beautifully with broad-leaved shade plants like hostas or brunnera.
For the most vibrant "pearly" effect, 'Pearly White' should be planted in a spot with partial to full shade, as too much direct sun can scorch the pale, sensitive foliage. It thrives in moist, humus-rich soil that is well-drained and slightly acidic. Because it lacks the darker pigments that offer some protection from the sun, consistent moisture is especially important to prevent the edges of the fronds from browning during the heat of summer.

To help Athyrium settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in rich, humus-heavy soil that is moist but well-draining. Athyrium thrive in consistent moisture and require good drainage to prevent the crown from rotting in heavy, compacted clays. Provide a location with partial to full shade - consistent shade helps protect the delicate fronds from scorching. Mulch around the base to keep the root zone cool and retain moisture.
