Zone: 3CRESTED SURF LADY FERN
Athyrium niponicum 'Crested Surf' is a standout cultivar of the Japanese Painted Fern that brings a unique, ruffled texture to the shade garden. While it retains the classic silvery-grey foliage and contrasting dark purple midribs of its parentage, it is distinguished by its "crested" tips. Each frond and pinna ends in a decorative, split fringe that gives the plant a much fuller, more voluminous appearance than traditional varieties. It maintains a tidy, mounded habit, making it an excellent choice for adding intricate detail to the front of a border or as a high-texture element in a mixed container.
To keep 'Crested Surf' looking its best, it should be planted in a spot that receives partial to full shade. A small amount of morning sun can help bring out the best silvery highlights, but the delicate, crested edges are prone to browning if exposed to harsh afternoon rays. It prefers consistently moist, rich, and well-drained soil with a high organic content. 'Crested Surf' is slightly more vigorous than some other painted ferns, but it still benefits from a sheltered location to protect its ornate, heavy fronds from wind damage. Maintaining a steady moisture level and applying a light layer of mulch will ensure its double-fringed foliage remains lush and vibrant throughout the growing season.

To help Athyrium settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in rich, humus-heavy soil that is moist but well-draining. Athyrium thrive in consistent moisture and require good drainage to prevent the crown from rotting in heavy, compacted clays. Provide a location with partial to full shade - consistent shade helps protect the delicate fronds from scorching. Mulch around the base to keep the root zone cool and retain moisture.
