GODZILLA PAINTED FERN

Athyrium 'Godzilla' is a massive, structural hybrid that lives up to its name by reaching much larger proportions than the typical Japanese Painted Fern. It forms a gargantuan, arching mound of silvery, tri-pinnate fronds with distinct purple to dark-red midribs, creating a shimmering effect in the shadows. It combines the intense coloration of its parentage with a vigorous, "king-sized" growth habit, often reaching three feet in height and spreading even wider. Its sheer scale makes it an ideal focal point for the back of a shade border, where it provides a prehistoric, architectural texture that smaller ferns simply cannot match.

To support its rapid growth and substantial size, 'Godzilla' should be planted in a spot with part to full shade and plenty of room to expand. It thrives in moist, fertile, and well-drained soil that is rich in composted organic matter; because of its large surface area, it can lose moisture quickly and requires consistent watering to prevent wilting. While it is a tough and reliable grower, providing a location protected from high winds is essential to keep its long, heavy fronds from snapping.

Planting Tips

To help Athyrium settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in rich, humus-heavy soil that is moist but well-draining. Athyrium thrive in consistent moisture and require good drainage to prevent the crown from rotting in heavy, compacted clays. Provide a location with partial to full shade - consistent shade helps protect the delicate fronds from scorching. Mulch around the base to keep the root zone cool and retain moisture.
