Zone: 3HAPPY SPIRIT FALSE SPIREA
Astilbe 'Happy Spirit' is an elegant perennial that brings a luminous quality to the shaded garden. This selection is a favorite for its pure white, feathery plumes that stand tall on showy, dark red-to-burgundy stems, creating a sophisticated "bicolor" effect. The airy flower spikes emerge in mid-to-late summer, rising above a dense mound of glossy, deeply serrated dark green foliage. Unlike some older Astilbe varieties that can look a bit ragged after blooming, 'Happy Spirit' maintains a neat, robust form, with its sturdy stems ensuring the blossoms stay upright even after a summer rain.
Happy Spirit requires consistently moist, humus-rich soil; it is not a "set it and forget it" plant for dry areas, as its delicate foliage will crisp at the edges if the ground dries out. It performs best in partial to full shade, making it ideal for woodland borders, the north side of a house, or alongside a shaded water feature like a pond or stream. Because it loves "wet feet" more than most perennials, it is also a perfect choice for those soggy spots in the yard where other plants might struggle. For a stunning visual impact, plant them in groups of three or five to create a glowing white drift that can brighten up even the dimmest corners of your landscape.

To help Astilbe arendsii types settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in moist, rich soil with a slightly acidic pH. Keep the soil consistently moist. Astilbe arendsii varieties do not tolerate drying out and thrive best when protected from hot, afternoon sun in dappled shade. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
