HARTS TONGUE FERN
Asplenium scolopendrium, frequently called the Hart's Tongue Fern, is a striking evergreen species that breaks the mold of the typical feathery fern appearance. Instead of deeply divided fronds, it produces solid, tongue-shaped leaves with a glossy, leathery texture and slightly wavy margins. These rich green fronds emerge from a central crown in an upright, arching habit, providing a bold architectural element that remains vibrant throughout the winter months. The undersides of mature leaves feature distinct, parallel rows of spore cases (sori) that look like "centipede legs," which is where the species name scolopendrium originates.
To keep Asplenium scolopendrium healthy, it should be situated in a spot with partial to full shade, as direct sunlight will quickly scorch and yellow its solid fronds. It is particularly unique because it prefers alkaline to neutral soil that is rich in organic matter and well-drained; it is a perfect choice for planting near limestone walls or in rock gardens. While it enjoys consistent moisture, it is more drought-tolerant than many other ferns once established. Providing a sheltered location away from drying winds will help maintain the pristine look of its foliage, making it an excellent companion for shade-loving perennials like hostas and hellebores.
