WHITE SWEET ALYSSUM

Lobularia maritima, widely known as Sweet Alyssum 'White', is a beloved, honey-scented annual that forms a low-growing, carpet-like mound of blooms. Typically reaching only 6 to 10 inches in height but spreading up to 12 inches or more, it is famous for its profuse clusters of tiny, four-petaled white flowers that can completely obscure its narrow, gray-green foliage. It is a pollinator magnet, frequently attracting bees and butterflies, and is often used in cottage gardens, rockeries, or as a fragrant "spiller" in mixed containers and hanging baskets.

For the best performance, plant Alyssum in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade; in hotter climates, a location with some afternoon shade will help prevent the plant from flagging during the mid-summer heat. It thrives in well-drained soil and, while moderately drought-tolerant once established, it prefers consistent moisture to keep the flowering cycle going. If the blooms begin to fade or the plant looks leggy in late summer, shearing it back by half will often encourage a fresh flush of growth and flowers as cooler autumn temperatures arrive. Its compact, non-invasive habit makes it an ideal choice for filling gaps between stepping stones or edging a garden border.
