REGAL SHIELDS ELEPHANT EAR

Alocasia 'Regal Shields' is a stunning hybrid, cross-bred between Alocasia odora and Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet', resulting in an Elephant Ear that balances impressive size with deep, moody coloration. Its large, spade-shaped leaves feature a velvety matte finish, appearing nearly black or deep forest green on top with striking pale green veins. The undersides offer a dramatic contrast, showcasing a rich burgundy or plum hue. 'Regal Shields' typically grows to a height of 5 to 6 feet, creating a dense, upright clump that provides a sophisticated, architectural look to any collection.

In terms of care, 'Regal Shields' prefers a location with bright, filtered light; direct afternoon sun should be avoided to prevent the dark pigments in the leaves from fading or burning. It requires well-aerated, chunky soil that retains moisture without becoming soggy, as the roots are sensitive to standing water. Maintaining a humid environment is essential for preventing crisp leaf edges, especially in indoor settings. During the growing season, a balanced fertilizer every few weeks will support its lush growth. If grown outdoors, ensure it is placed in a spot protected from strong winds, which can tear the broad, heavy foliage.
