PORTORA ELEPHANT EAR
Alocasia portora is a bold, tropical foliage plant prized for its enormous, upright, arrow-shaped leaves that bring an immediate architectural presence to the landscape. Often called a giant elephant ear, it forms a substantial clump with thick, sturdy petioles that hold the foliage high and well-structured rather than floppy. The leaves are glossy green with strong veining, and under warm, humid conditions the plant can reach impressive proportions, making it a dramatic focal point in tropical-style gardens or large mixed containers.
Alocasia portora performs best in partial shade to filtered sun, especially in hotter climates where harsh afternoon light can scorch the foliage. It requires consistent watering during the growing season and benefits from regular feeding to support its rapid growth and large leaf production. In colder climates, it is typically treated as a seasonal container plant or lifted and stored indoors before frost, as it is not frost-hardy. It excels in sheltered, humid locations such as patios, poolside plantings, and lush garden beds where its dramatic foliage can be fully appreciated without wind damage or temperature stress.
