BOBBLEHEAD ORNAMENTAL ONION

Allium 'Bobblehead' is a whimsical, "supersized" ornamental onion that brings a playful, architectural element to the midsummer garden. A robust upgrade to popular varieties like 'Serendipity,' it produces massive, 3 to 3.5 inch globe-like flower heads in a soft, pale lilac. They float on sturdy stems that reach up to 32 inches tall, hovering above a dense clump of attractive, glaucous blue-green foliage. Each leaf has a unique, gentle twist, adding texture even when the plant isn't in bloom. As a bonus, the flowers are a magnet for bees and butterflies, but the plant's natural onion scent makes it exceptionally resistant to deer and rabbits.

Allium 'Bobblehead' is remarkably easy to grow and maintain. It is both heat-tolerant and drought-resistant once established. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, though at least six hours of direct sunlight will produce the largest and most vibrant blooms. While it is adaptable to many soil types including clay, it requires well-drained soil to prevent bulb rot during its winter dormancy. It is ideal for mid-border placement, modern rock gardens, or as a "thriller" in large patio containers. Because the dried seed heads remain upright and attractive long after the color fades, it is also perfect for gardeners who want to maintain structural interest and a "naturalistic" look well into the autumn months.
