Zone: 3DIXIE CHIP BUGLEWEED
Ajuga reptans 'Dixie Chip' is a delightful tri-colored dwarf groundcover that brings a bright, multi-tonal look to the garden floor. It is a sport of 'Chocolate Chip' and shares its petite, narrow foliage, but adds a much broader color palette. The tiny leaves are a beautiful mosaic of green, creamy white, and rose-purple, creating a dense, spreading mat that stays low to the ground at only 3 to 6 inches tall. It is an excellent selection for adding fine-textured color to rock gardens, containers, or the narrow gaps between flagstones.
In the spring, 'Dixie Chip' is transformed by 4-inch spikes of brilliant violet-blue flowers that stand in stark, lovely contrast to the variegated foliage. It performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil, though it is quite adaptable once established. Like its parent, 'Dixie Chip' is valued for its improved resistance to crown rot and its ability to fill in tight spaces quickly without becoming overbearing. To keep the colors vibrant and the mat dense, ensure it has good air circulation and avoid planting it in areas that stay excessively soggy.

To help Ajuga settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in moist, well-draining soil with an exposure of partial shade to full shade - many varieties often perform best with some protection from intense afternoon sun. While Ajuga is a vigorous, mat-forming spreader, it requires good air circulation; avoid planting in low-lying areas where water pools, as this can lead to crown rot. Water regularly to establish, though it is moderately drought-tolerant once mature.
