Acer triflorum is commonly referred to as Three Flower Maple. It is a small, rounded, densely branched, understory tree native to northeastern China and Korea and related to the Manchurian Maple and the Paperbark Maple. It can reach the height of 25-30 feet with a 20 foot spread and is reminiscent of the Paperbark Maple with its beautiful foliage and exfoliating, vertically peeling bark showing off colors ranging from tan to cinnamon-brown. The specific epithet is in reference to the greenish-white flowers which are in clusters of three and appear in April. Trifoliate leaves change from green to yellow and red hues in fall.
Three Flower Maple thrives in full sun to partial shade in humus rich, evenly moist, well-draining soils.

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Select a well-drained site with full sun to partial shade where the soil remains consistently moist. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and set the tree so the root flare sits slightly above the soil line to prevent bark rot and promote healthy root development. Backfill with native soil, water deeply to eliminate air pockets, and apply a 3-inch layer of organic mulch around the base while keeping it clear of the trunk.
