OJISHI JAPANESE MAPLE

Acer palmatum 'Ojishi' is commonly referred to as Male Lion Japanese Maple. 'Ojishi' is the mythological male lion counterpart to the famous 'Shishigashira' mythological female lion of Japanese drama. 'Ojishi' differs from 'Shishigashira' with its older twisted growth. It flattens out more than the new growth which is the distinguishing feature of 'Shishigashira'.

Ojishi Japanese Maple features short branches with densely packed, rich green leaves creating a sculpted effect. Foliage turns bright yellow followed by burnt-orange in fall. Easy to imagine it being a lion's mane! It thrives in full sun to partial shade in organically rich, slightly acidic, evenly moist, well-draining soils. It will become more dense in full sun compared to more open in partial shade. Perfect for small areas and bonsai.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize annually with an acidic fertilizer. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
